Visiting Artist

Milica Jelača Jovanović

Born into a family of professional musicians in Beograd, Serbia, Milica Jelača Jovanović began giving recitals at the age of 8. Hailed “a pianist of great energy and charisma,” she has appeared as soloist with the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra, Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Western Washington University Symphony Orchestra, Radio Television Serbia Symphony Orchestra, “Stanislav Binički” Symphony Orchestra, and “Josip Slavenski” Baroque Orchestra among others. Recently she opened the 2018/19
Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra season in Benaroya Hall, Seattle, as a soloist in Chopin E minor Concerto.

Described as a “a brilliant performer,” Ms. Jelača Jovanović has performed in solo recitals and chamber music concerts throughout the United States, as well as in Toronto and Vancouver (Canada), Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Prague (the Czech Republic), Paris (France), Constanţa (Romania), Skopje (Republic of North Macedonia), Katowice and Krakow (Poland), Lübeck and Eckernförde (Germany), Bolzano (Italy), Dubna, Moscow, Novoagansk, Raduzhni,
St. Petersburg, Surgut (Russia), Beograd, Vrnjačka Banja, Kikinda, Negotin, Niš, Novi Sad, Priština, and Valjevo (Serbia).   

Besides winning numerous Serbian and Yugoslavian national piano competitions at a young age, Ms. Jelača Jovanović won prizes at several international competitions, including the inaugural 2005 Iowa International. Piano Competition and the First Prize at the 23rd Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition. in Virginia in 2003.  Following her studies in Belgrade, Ms. Jelača Jovanović earned her Master of Music Degree and Artist Diploma at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow under the direction of Mikhail Voskresensky and Elena. Kuznietzova, and her Doctorate in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, under the direction of Logan Skelton. In Ann Arbor, she has also studied with the fortepianist Penelope Crawford and the harpsichordist Edward Parmentier. Ms. Jelača Jovanović has also worked with Yong HI Moon, Karl Ulrich Schnabel, Earl Wilde and Homero Francesch. In 2004, she took a position at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, where she is currently a Professor of Piano and the Coordinator of the Keyboard Area.

Del Parkinson

Del Parkinson began studying piano at age five in his hometown of Blackfoot, Idaho.  He now holds a doctor of music degree from Indiana University and a postgraduate diploma from The Juilliard School. He was the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays grant for
graduate study in London. He was coordinator of piano instruction at Brigham Young University-Idaho, where he taught for eight years, and is now professor of piano at Boise State University, where he joined the faculty in 1985. His London debut recital was on the American Bicentennial Series, and his New York
debut recital in Carnegie Recital Hall was sponsored by the Idaho Commission on the Arts. He has performed with the Guadalajara Symphony, the Indiana University Symphony, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Utah Symphony, and the Boise Philharmonic. He is featured on four compact disc recordings: The American Piano Quartet and The American Piano Duo’s Mendelssohn Two-Piano Concerto, Rachmaninoff Duo Piano Works, and Celebrating Gershwin. He is the recipient of the Boise State University foundation scholar award for creative activity, the Boise mayor’s award for artistic excellence, the Morrison Center honor medallion, the Idaho Commission on the Arts career fellowship award, and the Idaho governor’s award for excellence in the arts. Yoon-Wha Roh

Acclaimed as “a pianist who lets her piano work do the talking, transporting her audience not only to a clearly defined place but also into a colorful adventure” (Hyde Park Herald), Yoon-Wha Roh has been acknowledged for her versatile and sophisticated performances. Roh has appeared as a celebrated soloist with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra,
New Jersey Garden State Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Korean Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul National Symphony Orchestra, Sungnam Philharmonic Orchestra, and
New York Classical Symphony Orchestra. She has also been featured in Korean monthly music magazines, <Eumak Journal> and <The Piano>, for her orchestra performances and interviews.

Roh has won awards and prizes from numerous competitions including, London International Music Competition, Clara Schumann International Competition, Manhattan International Music Competition, National Artists Competition, American Prize, International Moscow Music Competition, Carles and Sofia Piano Competition, Piano Texas Concerto Competition, and Hakata Fukuoka International Piano Competition among others.

Other notable performances have been presented at the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center Bruno Walter Auditorium, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, Seoul Arts Center, Aspen Harris Concert Hall, New York Steinway Hall, Jordan Hall, and Barnes Hall in Cornell University.

Visiting Artist

Kay Zavislak

American pianist Kay Zavislak enjoys a multi-faceted career as a performer, teacher, adjudicator, and clinician. Spending her formative years in Japan, Ms. Zavislak attended the Toho Gakuen High School of Music, one of the most prestigious conservatories in Japan. Ms. Zavislak then moved to the U.S. and earned the degrees Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan.

As a performer, Kay Zavislak has given solo recitals and chamber concerts regionally and nationally, in addition to public performances in Australia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, and Poland. In collaboration with flutist Leonard Garrison and saxophonist Bill Perconti, Ms. Zavislak has also recorded two commercial CDs for Centaur Records.

In 2001, Ms. Zavislak was named a winner of the concerto competition at the University of Michigan. Her other awards include first prize in the Frances Walton Competition, second prize in the Richardson Young Artist Award Competition, second prize in the All-Tohoku Piano Competition in Japan, and third prize in the William Byrd International Concerto Competition.

Many of Ms. Zavislak’s university and pre-college students have received top prizes and honors in a number of regional piano festivals and competitions, such as the Music Fest Northwest in Spokane, Sonata-Sonatina Festival in Ellensburg, Northern Idaho Piano Festival, Spokane Piano Competition, Music Teachers National Association Idaho State and Washington State Competitions, and MTNA Northwest Regional Competition.

Before joining her family in Bellingham in 2013, Ms. Zavislak was an Assistant Professor of Piano and the
Keyboard Area Coordinator at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music. In addition, she has held teaching positions at Schoolcraft College, Albion College, and the University of Michigan. She studied piano under the guidance of Arthur Greene, Logan Skelton, Yoshie Kora, and Miyoko Hamamoto, harpsichord with Edward Parmentier, and organ with Marilyn Mason.

Deadline for Student Chapter Fee ($10 per MAP student) is Monday, January 9, 2023.

Submit online payment below. 

1. Log in to wsmta.org using your membership # and password.
2. Print out and follow the Music Artistry Program booklet https://y3e3n2z4.stackpathcdn.com/
wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2023-2024-MAP-Booklet.pdf. Watch the helpful tutorial.
3. Complete the online Teacher Registration Form for the Music Artistry Program, observing all
instructions in the “Must Read” document.
4. Pay online.
5. Print one copy of the Registration for your records.
6. Pay your Student Chapter Fee ($10 x number of participating MAP students) AND submit your
request for a location or a date or a Visiting Artist.
