Eastside MTA
Music Literacy Program
Eastside MTA
The Music Literacy Program is a program offered through the Washington State Music Teachers Association. It is a comprehensive tool for parents, teachers and students alike to assess where the student excels and where more work is needed in written theory, listening skills, sight reading, rhythm reading and skills (scales, chords, arpeggios). The Eastside chapter of WSMTA will hold its MLP exams May 9 from 9am -noon and 1pm-5pm at the Church of the Holy Cross in Redmond. Listening skills will be offered at specific times during the day but students can choose when to take the other exams.
All exams are offered by grade 1 – 10, 1 being primary level and level 10, early advanced. Students may enter any category at any level they and their teacher chooses. Students can mix levels if they are more proficient in one category over another. Sight reading will be conducted by the student’s teacher. Requirements for each level are clearly outlined on the Washington State Music Teachers website under the MLP section. Teachers should look over these skills early in their teaching year so they can be guiding their students to proficiency at whatever level they need. Note particularly the section for reference materials. Study guides and trial tests are available for written theory. Teachers register their students via the registration form provided on the EMTA website.
Teachers who enter students in the MLP MUST agree to volunteer time to assist the day of the event. The more students entered the more volunteer time requested. There is no charge for participation in MLP, thanks to the Woodcock Fund which provides funds for our student educational activities.
All participants receive a WSMTA certificate and ribbons for passing an event. Students who earn 85% or higher on the written exam will receive a gold seal on their certificate. Those earning 98% or higher will be listed along with their teacher in the WSMTA publication, The Clarion.
A program of the Washington State MTA offered by the Eastside Chapter
DATE: Saturday, May 9
TIMES: 9 a.m. – 12 noon
1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
LOCATION: Church of the Holy Cross, Redmond
Co-Chairs: Betsy Duncan Randolph, Holly Seneker
Skills which can be tested: written theory, aural theory, rhythm, sight reading, technique (scales, chords, arpeggios).
There are 10 levels of difficulty in every skills category. Students may test in ANY level for each category. Levels between categories may differ depending upon the student’s skill level. Students along with their teacher, will decide which category or categories, will be right for them. Tests grades will NOT be immediately available. Exam papers will be returned to teachers following grading.
All teachers entering students are REQUIRED to volunteer time. Help is needed in the administration of the tests, setting up the venue, tearing down the venue, registration, hosting, grading, and distributing tests. We also need help making copies and organizing tests, folders and presenters’ files prior to the MLP date.
The WSMTA registration fee of $3 is waived for students of all Eastside Chapter members because the Woodcock Fund has generously offered to pay those costs. However, each student will also be charged a Chapter administrative fee of $5. When the student is registered on the WSMTA website, the registration fee of $3 per student must accompany the form. This needs to be paid by the teacher, but THIS MONEY will be reimbursed to you shortly after the event. Families will pay the $5 administrative fee via their teacher. Teachers will collect those fees and submit the TOTAL AMOUNT of all the administrative fees to the EMTA treasurer. This money goes to EMTA, not the State. Administrative fees are due at the time of registration.
Skill requirements for each level in each category are clearly outlined on the WSMTA website under the MLP dropdown. Please look at these early in the year so your student will be adequately prepared for the exams. Note particularly the section for reference materials.
MLP is a comprehensive tool for students, parents and teachers alike to assess where students excel and where more study is needed. It is meant to be a year end evaluation of skills learned throughout the studio year.
Participation certificates are given to every student. Ribbons are given in the category(ies) the student passes. In written theory, an 85% and above score earns an Honors ribbon and a gold seal on the certificate. Students earning a 98% and above will have their name and their teacher’s name listed in the WSMTA e-journal, The Clarion.
